Nyidron: Protecting Biodiversity of Xizang, Breeding Rare Plant Species

2026-03-11 14:45:00China Tibet Online

Nyidron, deputy to the NPC, director of the Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory at the Xizang Institute of Plateau Biology:

"In July 2025, tissue-cultured seedlings of wild Anoectochilus roxburghii from Metok, cultivated over three years, were successfully transplanted and flowered in Lhasa. This achievement holds great significance for our team. It marks the first successful cultivation of this plant species in high-altitude, relatively arid conditions. It represents a phased breakthrough in the conservation technology of rare plants under cold, harsh environments and provides replicable experience for biodiversity protection and the development of specialty biological industries in Xizang. Looking ahead, our team will make every effort to conserve more species, cultivate more valuable seedlings, and supply artificial breeding seedlings to relevant pharmaceutical enterprises and production units to reduce reliance on wild medicinal plants, contributing the expertise of scientific researchers to the harmonious interaction between biodiversity conservation and economic and social development."
