Recently, cham dance activity was carried out in Tashilhunpo Monastery in Xigaze, Xizang to drive out evil spirits, make efforts to avert calamity, and pray for contented people living in a country at peace and good weather for the crops.
Cham dance is a religious dance performed by monks. The monks from Tashilhunpo Monastery wear masks and theatrical costumes, hold all kinds of props, and perform divine dances one after another with the accompaniment of a band consisting of monks. The atmosphere is solemn and mysterious. The monks and believers in the crowd stare at the stage, recite scriptures, and pray for world peace, contented people living in a country at peace, and good weather for the crops.
In 2006, Cham Dance of Tashilhunpo Monastery was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
